Stillness Is My Objective

There are many invisible voices
                  some inside my head
                  others floating in the air.

I listen to them
chattering away,
cajoling,
barking orders,
making wisecracks,
but never-ever-ever ready
and willing to shut up.

The voices tell me otherwise,
but stillness is my objective.

If I can come to awareness
and recognize all the voices
demanding my attention,
I’ve already made strides
towards stillness.

Prayer and steady breathing
                  taking deep, slow breaths,
awakens my soul.

Then, as if floating
along a gentle current,
I blink open my eyes
to see the world anew
                  my soul in divine presence.
